“It’s just like family. You understand, right?”

Family under TreesNot necessarily. That’s the thing about family... they’re all different. Some of us grew up in something we might call “normal” while others of us grew up in something that might be described as “dysfunctional.” And the rest of us realize that we probably grew up with something in-between. Families are just different.

And yet when we look at the Bible God uses the family as a metaphor for the type of relationships we are to have with one another. God is our Father. And we are to treat each others as brothers and sisters. If we were to close our eyes for a moment and imagine what a healthy family might look, we imagine one where brothers stand up for each other and older sisters that encouraged and cried with us. We imagine fathers who challenged us to be a man—and mothers who taught us how to do our own laundry. We have a crazy uncle who, in his more serious moments, could offer incredibly deep insight on life. And then there’s our beloved grandmother that shared amazing stories of how she and your grandfather stood by each other during the most difficult times. All of these things make us who we are. They carried us from infancy and imparted great wisdom as we entered adulthood. These are some of the stories we have and some of the stories we wish for. This is family at its best.

At Grace, we want to keep God’s admonition to treat each other like family because we are God’s family. To that end, we try to offer communities and resources that fulfill these family roles. Our Adult Communities are a great place to start. They meet weekly on Sunday mornings and share life together in a large group setting. If you are new to Grace, this is a terrific way to begin building relationships with a core group of people. The leaders there will help you connect to our family and help you engage with your skills and talents. Hopefully, this will quickly feel like home.

And along the way you may discover that you have specific needs that we can help you with: marriage mentoring, basics of the Christian life, basic finances, life mentoring, or parenting teenagers. Whatever it is, we are a family. And family is one of God’s primary means of getting us to a place where we can help change the world.
